How trading fees work

Maker and taker, how your fee tier is set, and where to read the live rates.
Every trade charges a fee to each side, taken in the quote currency of the pair — the asset the market is priced in — on a buy and on a sell alike. That is the asset you spend when you buy and the asset you receive when you sell, and it is not a choice the order form offers. Which rate applies depends on whether you made liquidity or took it.
- You are the maker when your order was already resting on the book and someone else traded against it.
- You are the taker when your order filled immediately against orders already there.
The maker rate is the lower of the two. A post-only order is the way to guarantee you are on that side.
Fee tiers
On markets that use a tiered schedule, your tier is the better of two measures: your trading volume over the last 30 days, and your assets on platform — the value of everything you hold here. Whichever of the two qualifies you for the lower rate is the one that applies, and qualifying through both at the same tier adds nothing. As either measure crosses a tier threshold, the rate for subsequent trades improves. Markets that are not on a tiered schedule charge a single flat maker and taker rate.
Assets on platform is read from an hourly capture of your portfolio, so a change in your holdings reaches your tier at the next capture rather than the moment it lands. Trading volume counts your settled spot trades on crypto pairs, as maker or taker; a pair not quoted in USDT or USDC is converted at the reference price of its quote asset at the time of the trade.
The fees page lists the live rate for every market. It reads from the same tables the settlement path charges by, so what is published and what you are charged cannot differ — which is also why no rate is written into this article.
Instant buy and sell
Convert — instant buy and sell — charges no separate trading fee. The price you are quoted already includes a spread over the market price, and that quote stays firm for a short window while you confirm; the fees page states the spread and the window, both read from the same settings the quote engine runs on. Convert volume does not count toward your 30-day volume tier.
